The request by President Goodluck Jonathan for the Senate to confirm the following
nominees for appointment as Resident Electoral Commissioners in the Independent National
Electoral Commission (INEC), was on Thursday, 24th November, 2011, referred to the
Committee on INEC, for further legislative input.
The Nominees are Prof. Jacob Shekwonudu Jatau (Nasarawa), Baba Abba Yusuf (Borno), Segun
Agbaje (Ekiti), Nasir Ayilara (Kwara) and Barrister Austine Okojie (Edo). Three of the
nominees are for fresh appointment while two are re-appointments.
In a similar vein, the Senate also referred to the Committee on National Identity and
National Population the screening of Dr. Ahiwe Samuel Chibunna (Abia State) for
appointment as a Member of the National Population Commission (NPC).
The Committee has one week to report back.
Meanwhile, Three (3) fresh Bills were presented before the Senate on Thursday, 24th
November, 2011. They were the Nigerians in Diaspora (Establishment, etc) Bill 2011
(SB.28), the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, Cap. C.4 LFN, 2007 (Amendment) Bill 2011 (SB.75)
and the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission Act (Amendment) Bill
2011 (SB. 76).
In a related development, the Senate, at the same sitting, stood down deliberations on the
consideration of President Jonathan’s request for the approval of the 2012 – 2015
Medium-Term Fiscal Framework (MTEF) and 2012 Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP, to enable
Senators study the request.
