SENATE FURTHER CONDEMNS SAME SEX MARRIAGE IN NIGERIA
ABUJA, 17th December 2013 – Sen. Umaru Dahiru presented the ‘Report of the
Conference Committee on Same Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill 2011.’ After a
short deliberation the senate adopted the report which condemns same sex
marriage by individuals and outlaws the practice in Nigeria. 'We have so
many shortcomings’; Senate president David Mark lamented, ‘we don't want to
add this one to it'. Sen. Mark added, in his concluding remarks.
Also in the Senate ten Bills had their first readings including the
'Whistle Blowers Protection Bill 2013', 'Consumer Protection Bill 2013',
'Victims Assistance Bill 2013' and 'Pollution Prevention Bill 2013'. Sen.
Aloysius Etok presented the ‘Report Of The Committee On Establishment And
Public Service On The Screening Of The Following Nominees For Appointment
As Chairman And Full-Time Commissioners For The National Pension
Commission.’ The five individuals are Ahmadu Mu’azu as Chairman and Chinelo
Anohu-Amazu, Omotowa Gilbert, Mohammed Abubakar and Adesojo Olaoba-Efuntayo
as Commissioners. They represent all Nigeria’s geopolitical zone except
south-south which had no nominee on the list. The Senate approved all the
five nominees and they were thus confirmed. Sen. Mark on behalf of the
Senate congratulated the nominees, he noted that the commission is very
important and the nominees have to prove that the Senate did the right
thing. He also urged the nominees to remember that pensioners go through a
lot of hardship in Nigeria.
Another ‘Report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal
Matters on the Screening of the Following Nominees for Appointments as
Chairman And Commissioners of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission’, was
presented in the house by Sen. Umaru Dahiru. The Senate resolved into a
Committee Of The Whole to consider the report. The Senate approved three of
the four individuals who are Prof. Osunbor as the Chairman; Mr. Magaji and
Mr. Okorie as Commissioners. The Senate deferred the screening of Mrs.
Zainab Ibrahim, the fourth nominee. Senate President David in his
concluding remarks spoke highly of the chairman who he praised as a worthy
man, an academician and a sound politician. He congratulated the team.
